Wally Joyner may be ideal hitting coach for Los Angeles Angels

Longtime big leaguer and current hitting instructor Wally Joyner has spent the last week or so as a guest instructor at Los Angeles Angels Spring Training camp. His newest task: working with a hitless Cameron Maybin, a former pupil of his from his Detroit Tigers days.

This should be an easy turnaround for Maybin, who posted career high offensive numbers while under Joyner’s tutelage last season.

So far, Joyner has been nothing but influential and effective in his small stint with the Angels. Given that he’s currently a free agent (so to speak), is there any way the Angels can keep him around?

Joyner has a deep-rooted history with the Angels—he was their first baseman for the first six seasons of his 16-year MLB career. He also spent his last season there as well, retiring as a member of the organization that gave him his first big league opportunity. As a 1986 Rookie All-Star and a joint-winner of that year’s Home Run Derby, Joyner was a key piece to the Angels’ postseason in 1986, where he helped get them to the ALCS.

Joyner already mentioned how comfortable he feels working with the Angels again, recalling his time with them as “great memories.

The Angels suggested the former Halo to stick around after Spring Training ends. Specifically, they want him to work with Matt Thaiss, one of the Angels’ top prospects.

Joyner could coach the Angels’ Triple-A team and rookie-league team through the summer without a big commute, since he enjoys living in Utah with his family. This could be a win-win arrangement for both the coach and the organization.

“I haven’t closed the door, but I don’t want to just take a job. I want one I would enjoy. Bench coach, manager, those jobs are few and far between, but they have my interest,” said Joyner of a new position.

Joyner already knows how the Angels work, and is making positive changes to the team’s batting and more within a week’s time.

Who knows what sort of benefits keeping Joyner could bring to the Angels organization?
